Establishing Your Project Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

Updated: 1 hour ago

A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a foundational data requirement for all commercial management. In UniPhi, the WBS is typically set up using the project list.

How to Create Your WBS

You can import and maintain your WBS in UniPhi using several methods:

  • Copy/Paste from Excel: Use the copy/paste feature in the Summary tab.

  • API: Programmatically import and maintain the WBS using the UniPhi API.

  • Manual Entry: Create projects one by one in the Summary tab.

Structuring Your WBS

UniPhi's WBS is not a simple hierarchy; it is a matrix model. This allows you to structure work in multiple ways.

  • Parent/Child Projects: The WBS typically uses two levels.

    • Parent Project: Aligns with a major Work Package or project area (e.g., "WP00C").

    • Child Project: Forms the components of that package, such as lifecycle stages or disciplines (e.g., "Activity 1," "Activity 2").

  • Global Tags & Custom Fields: To create the matrix, you tag these projects with different filters and relabel them. UniPhi offers 4 out-of-the-box global tags that can be relabeled to match your WBS levels (e.g., "Discipline," "Area").

    • Sector

    • Project Type

    • Service Line

    • Location

  • Timesheet Tasks: The lowest level of the hierarchy for capturing actual effort is Timesheet Tasks. These can be set globally or as unique lists for each project/work package.

These can be configured by an admin by going to Configuration > Timesheets > Standard Tasks

If additional WBS categorization is required, you can create and apply Project Custom Fields in the configuration engine under the Project section.
